Quick Answer

The first two hours after landing in China should be simple: get online, keep your passport ready, test one payment method, save your hotel address in Chinese, then choose the safest route to your hotel. Do not try to solve every app problem at the airport. Your goal is to leave the airport with a working connection, a readable destination, and at least one backup payment method.

Official payment guidance for overseas visitors says mobile payments, bank cards and cash can all be used in China, and that foreign users can link international cards in Alipay and WeChat Pay. That means your first-hour plan should not depend on one app only. Prepare Alipay, WeChat Pay, a physical card and some RMB cash where possible.

Before You Walk Out of Arrivals

1. Confirm mobile data or Wi-Fi

Open a browser and load a simple website. Then open Alipay, WeChat, Didi and Amap. If your roaming or eSIM is not working, stay inside the airport while you troubleshoot; airport staff, information counters and Wi-Fi are easier to find there than on the curb.

If you plan to buy a local SIM, keep your passport ready. Beijing's official SIM-card guide says users should prepare a passport, and that valid passport holders may apply for mobile cards. Airport counters can be convenient, but they can also be busy, so do not make this your only plan if you need to leave quickly.

2. Save your hotel address in Chinese

Before requesting a ride, copy your hotel name and full address in Chinese. Save it in Notes, screenshots and Amap. A good hotel-address note should include:

  • Hotel name in Chinese
  • Street address in Chinese
  • District and city
  • Phone number
  • Booking confirmation screenshot
  • A map pin if available

If a driver, taxi dispatcher or hotel staff member does not understand the English name, show the Chinese version.

3. Test payment with a small action

Open Alipay or WeChat Pay and confirm that your card is still visible. If you can buy a bottle of water or small item, use that as a low-risk payment test. If it fails, do not panic. Use another wallet, another card or cash. Larger payments such as hotel deposits can fail more easily than small QR payments.

Decide How to Leave the Airport

Option A: Metro or airport rail

Choose this if you are comfortable carrying luggage and your hotel is near a station. Use Amap to check the route before leaving the terminal. Metro is predictable, usually cheaper and avoids traffic, but stairs, transfers and crowding can be hard after a long flight.

Option B: Didi or ride hailing

Choose this if you have mobile data, a clear pickup point and the ability to identify the license plate. Didi's official app listing says it supports an English interface, global mobile number login and bilingual messaging between riders and drivers. Use in-app chat if the driver calls and you cannot speak Chinese.

Option C: Regular taxi

Choose this if your payment apps are failing or you prefer an airport taxi line. Have your hotel address in Chinese ready. Ask the driver to use the meter if needed. Keep cash and a physical card available, because payment options vary by driver and city.

First-Hour Checklist

  1. Passport and visa/entry documents are accessible.
  2. Mobile data or airport Wi-Fi works.
  3. Hotel address is saved in Chinese.
  4. At least one payment method is ready.
  5. A backup payment method is available.
  6. Route to hotel is checked in Amap or another map app.
  7. Emergency numbers are saved: 110 police, 120 ambulance, 119 fire, 122 traffic accident.
  8. You have screenshots of booking confirmations.

If Something Fails

No internet

Stay inside the terminal. Try airport Wi-Fi, restart mobile data, check roaming/eSIM settings or buy a SIM at an official counter. Do not leave for a ride-hailing pickup zone if your phone cannot receive messages.

Payment fails

Try the other wallet, use a physical card at larger merchants, withdraw or exchange cash, and keep the failed transaction screenshot. Foreign-card payments can fail because of card-issuer controls, account verification, merchant category or transaction limits.

Driver calls you

Do not try to have a long voice conversation if you do not speak Chinese. Open Didi chat, use the built-in translation feature, send a simple message and stay near the pickup pin.

Hotel cannot find your booking

Show your booking number, passport and Chinese hotel name. If the hotel says it cannot accept foreigners, ask it to contact the booking platform or local police registration support. Do not argue at the desk for too long if you are tired; use the booking platform to relocate you.
